„Light in the Darkness” a Polish-Ukrainian theatre workshop

Young Poles and Ukrainians deal with the difficult history during the theatre-workshop in August. Ten youth from Kirowohrad/ Kropiwnicki (Ukraine) and eight boys and girls from Oświęcim/Auschwitz and Nowy Sącz (Poland) worked with the topics “Auschwitz and the Holocaust” as well as “Human Rights in the Postwar Society” and tried to present their impressions and reflections in the form of a theatrical performance.

The idea of the workshop arose from the cooperation of the International Youth Meeting Centre with the Society of Poles of the Kirowohrad region “Polonia” and the Student Sports Club “Jocker”, which functions at the School Complex Nr 1 in Oświęcim. The realization of the project was possible thanks to the financial support of the Foundation for the Commemoration of the Victims of Auschwitz-Birkenau Extermination Camp, the IG Metall-Wolfsburg and the Foundation Supporting the IYMC and the Förderverein IJBS e.V.

In the first part of the project the participants worked with the topic “Auschwitz and WWII in Europe”. They compared the memory cultures in Ukraine and Poland and visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Site. After the visit the young people discussed the system of human rights in postwar Europe and focused on particular human rights during the city game in Cracow. In the second part the young Ukrainians and Poles have processed their impressions and thoughts during the theatre workshop and together created the script for the play.

Summing up the seminar, the participants underlined that they managed to create a friendly atmosphere in the group, received a lot of new impressions and enjoyed the work and the time spent together.
