in Auschwitz II Birkenau
On August the 2nd the main ceremony commemorating the liquidation of the “Zigeunerlager” during the night of the 2-3 August 1944 took place on the grounds of the museum of KL Auschwitz II Birkenau.
After the ceremony, organized by Roman Kwiatkowski Head of the Association of Roma in Poland, over 80 guests followed the invitation issued by the Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Werner Köhler, to come together for the traditional reception at the IYMC. During his speech Romani Rose, Head of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma, congratulated the Consul on continuing this “wonderful tradition” of inviting the guest to the IYMC like over the past 20 years. During this meeting in the IYMC numerous Roma organisations from all over Europe gathered in our forum among others from Austria, Czech Republic, Sweden and Hungary - Prof. Rudolf Sarközi, Andreas Sarközi, Gejza Adam, Soraya Post and Lazlo Teleki. After the banquet the guests of honour Dr. Jan S. Ciechanowski, Ruth Cohne Dar, and Christian Autenberger were introduced to the work of the IYMC by our director Leszek Szuster.
