On August 27th a ceremony celebrating the planting of a Korbinian apple tree took place at the IYMC. The variety was bred in secret by the priest Korbinian Aigner, during his time as a prisoner of KL Dachau. In 1985, on his 100th birthday, the variety was attributed the name “Korbinian”.
During the ceremony Christoph Heubner- Executive Vice-President of the International Auschwitz Committee and initiator of the project, representatives of the Volkswagen AG, Leszek Szuster – Director of the IYMC, as well as Andrzej Kacorzyk – Vice-Director of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum spoke to the audience. The meeting was moderated by Ines Doberanzke.
This tree remembers all Jews from many countries across Europe murdered in Auschwitz and mourns all victims of German National Socialists. It also bears witness of all the trainees, managers and master craftsmen of the Volkswagen AG, that together with polish youths and polish colleagues took part in the memorial site work organized by the corporation: together with the International Auschwitz Committee residing in the International Youth Meeting Center in Oświęcim. With these words the idea of the project is described on a plate which is located along the apple tree in front of the main building of the IYMC.
