With deep sorrow we inform that on March the 12th 2016, Rudolf Sarközi, chairman of the Austrian Romani Cultural Society passed away.
He was born in 1944 in the national-socialist “Lager für Zigeuner” (Gypsy Camp) in Austria, from which hundreds of Sinti and Roma were deported to extermination camps. Till the late 1960’s he lived in Unterschütze and then moved to Vienna with his wife and his son. In the 1980’s Mr. Sarközi was very involved in fighting discrimination against Roma and their culture. In 1991 he was co-founder of the Austrian Romani Cultural Society and due to his initiative the Romani minority in Austria achieved legal recognition in 1993. 2002 he was awarded the honorary title “Professor” by the President of Austria Dr. Thomas Klestil.
