on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the IYMC

On June 21st 2016 the festivities on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the International Youth Meeting Centre in Oświęcim took place at the Institute for Church and Judaism of the Humboldt University in Berlin.

The event was organized by Action Reconciliation - Service for Peace, the International Auschwitz Committee and the IYMC. The host Prof. Dr. Dres. h.c. Christoph Markschies inaugurated the event and after welcoming words by Dr. Dagmar Pruin – director of ARSP, Christoph Heubner – Executive-Vice President of the IAC, Dr. Markus Dröge – protestant Bischop and Zofia Posmysz – writer, survivor of KL Auschwitz and Ravensbrück a panel discussion took place, which was moderated by the polish journalist Jacek Lepiarz. The participants of this discussion were Deirdre Berger – AJC Berlin Ramer Institute for German-Jewish Relations, Christoph Heubner, Leszek Szuster – Director of IYMC, Judith Hoehne – Deputy Head of the Education and Programme Department of the IYMC on behalf of ASRP. Dietmar Nietan – Memeber of the Bundestag and Co-Chairman of the Foundation council of the IYMC and Matteo Schürenberg – Deputy Head of ASRP.

During the discussion the 100 guests were shown the challenges the initiators had to master for building the IYMC during the time of the cold war. The discussion was focused on the mission of the house as well as the tasks connected to civic education. By offering different perspectives the participants showed the uniqueness of the project International Youth Meeting Centre and searched for answers to the challenges the house will face over the following years.

Während der Diskussion wurden den über 100 Gästen die Herausforderungen nähergebracht, vor die die Initiatoren des Baus der Jugendbegegnungsstätte in der Zeit vor der Wende in Polen gestellt worden waren. Im Fokus des Gesprächs standen die Mission des Hauses und die Aufgaben in der laufenden staatsbürgerlichen und Bildungsarbeit. Durch Präsentation verschiedener Perspektiven betonten die Diskussionsteilnehmer die Einzigartigkeit des Projektes der Internationalen Jugendbegegnungsstätte und suchten nach Antworten auf die Herausforderungen, vor die das Haus in den nächsten Jahren gestellt wird.
