On August 2nd 2017 a ceremony took place in the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of the liquidation of the so-called “Gypsy Camp”. For this occasion – apart from a delegation of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma- survivors of the camp, representatives of the polish state, ambassadors and members of Sinti & Roma associations from different countries, as well as a delegation from the International Youth Meeting Centre in Oswiecim/Auschwitz came to Birkenau.
Following the invitation of Dr Michael Groß, General Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in Krakow, about 70 guests came to the IYMC after the ceremony to participate in a reception which over the years has established itself as a nice tradition.
. The German ambassador to Poland, Rolf Nickel, welcomed the guests before handing the word to the director of the IYMC, Leszek Szuster. Romani Rose, chairman of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma, stressed the important role of the yearly reunion in the IYMC after the celebrations in the museum and thanked the IYMC for its long-lasting work in youth exchanges between young Sinti & Roma and youths from Germany and Poland, as well as for the numerous seminars dealing with this matter realized at the IYMC.
