The workshop is based on a unique document – the only surviving visual evidence of the process of mass murder at Auschwitz-Birkenau. The “Auschwitz Album” presents the arrival of Hungarian Jews to the camp in the early summer of 1944. On March 19th the Germans occupied Hungary. Adolf Eichmann was immediately delegated to Budapest, where, with the help of a 150-person unit and of the Hungarian public authorities and members of the Arrow Cross Party, he organized the deportations of Hungarian Jews, among others, to Auschwitz. By working with historical sources the participants learn more about the “Final Solution” and Auschwitz-Birkenau, which turned out to be a death camp for the majority of people who arrived, and a concentration camp for the few selected to work as forced labourers.
