LEARNING FROM HISTORY

Sonderkommando photographs – from resistance to remembrance

The workshop is based on the four photographs, taken clandestinely in 1944 by Sonderkommando prisoners at great risk to their lives. These are regarded as the only photographic documentation of the crimes of the Holocaust at Auschwitz - women on the way to the gas chamber and burning of the bodies of Jewish victims in Auschwitz II - Birkenau. The film with these photographs was smuggled out of the camp via the resistance network, which included both Jewish and Polish prisoners, as well as local Poles from the Oświęcim area. The workshop traces the history of these photographs and concludes with a visit as well as short presentation in the Gerhard Richter BIRKENAU pavilion, where an edition of the "Birkenau" series is exhibited.
