A HOUSE TO LIVE
A PLACE TO LEARN

We are in the town of Oświęcim to remind about Auschwitz. To convince, that we must learn from the past. We show that Oświęcim can be a place of meetings, reconciliation, and understanding. We are in the town of Oświęcim so that Auschwitz will not be repeated.

Today, the International Youth Meeting Centre in Oświęcim hosted Mr. Akio Miyajima, Ambassador of Japan in Warsaw, and Ms. Michiko Makino, Director of the Information and Culture Department of the Embassy of Japan in Warsaw. The delegation was accompanied by Mr. Janusz Chwierut, president of the city of Oświęcim, Mr. Andrzej Kacorzyk, director of the International Centre for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust, Ms. Helena Wisła, chairman of the board of the Foundation - Memorial Hospice of the City of Oświęcim and Mr. Marek Tarnowski, head of the City Promotion Department. The guests were welcomed by Joanna Klęczar-Déodat , director of the IYMC.

The delegation came to Oświęcim to hand over a gift from Hiroshima - a ginkgo tree sapling, which survived the atomic bomb explosion in 1945. The tree was planted in the Avenue of Memorial Trees in Zasole Park in Oświęcim, where trees donated by Guernica, Dachau and Ukraine already grow. The ceremony was organised to commemorate the 78th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

On the occasion of their visit to the IYMC, the delegation toured our House and viewed the Nobuhiko Utsumi exhibition - the result of the art action "Requiem for the Twentieth Century" carried out in 2000 in the gardens of the IYMC.
